Drag Specialties and Parts Unlimited Team with Mees, Texter in Search of 2018 Titles

Following its announcement as the Official Parts and Accessories Wholesaler of American Flat Track racing, Drag Specialties has moved to deepen its AFT Twins presented by Vance & Hines involvement by partnering with 2017 Grand National Champion and early 2018 Championship leader Jared Mees.

Drag’s sister company Parts Unlimited is throwing its support behind AFT singles rider Shayna Texter (the winningest rider in AFT Singles history) in search of a unique Singles and Twins Championship double.
“It’s always great to have committed high-end sponsors,” said Mees, “and the Parts Unlimited and Drag Specialties folks are fantastic – for me, for flat track and for motorcycling in general. I’m really pumped about our partnership.”
Texter is coming off a five-win season that upped her all-time AFT Singles wins mark to 11 (three more than any other rider). As impressive as it was, she’s reshuffling the deck this season in search of at least attaining her first AFT Singles crown. Just two weeks ago she announced she’d be running her own program in 2018 with support from Husqvarna Motorcycles.
“We are very excited to have Jared Mees and Shayna Texter as part of our Drag Specialties and Parts Unlimited family,” said Hylton Beattie, Global Motorsports Director for Parts Unlimited. “These two exceptional athletes will make a great addition to the already strong group of riders that we sponsor in two-wheel motorsports worldwide.”
After the season opening Daytona TT, at the time of writing, next up will be the Harley-Davidson Atlanta Short Track presented by Hellbender Harley-Davidson (April 7, 2018) at the legendary Dixie Speedway in Woodstock, GA., just 30 minutes northwest of downtown Atlanta.

Kuryakyn signs Mees

Kuryakyn has inked a new sponsorship deal with 2017 AFT Pro Twins Grand National Champion Jared Mees that extends throughout the 2018 AFT season.

“The thrill of flat track racing recaptured an entire industry and fan base with its recent resurgence,” said Kuryakyn Creative Marketing Director Undria Davis. “We’re incredibly proud to support Jared and his team in their pursuit of retaining the No. 1 plate. At the same time, this sponsorship, combined with the rising popularity of flat track racing, presents an exciting opportunity for us to reach a new enthusiast demographic that aligns extremely well with our brand’s direction going forward.”
Mees is set to defend a dominant 2017 campaign where he won 10 races en route to earning Indian Motorcycle its first GNC in over 60 years. This sponsorship agreement marks Kuryakyn’s return to racing following their support of riders competing in the NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series and AMA Vance & Hines XR1200 Series in 2011.

CCE fork tubes

Legendary Californian parts specialist Custom Cycle Engineering was founded in 1967 by Randy Smith – one of the originators of the parts and accessory aftermarket we know today.

While many of Smith’s original designs are still on the market, unchanged, CCE has not stood still, having kept right up to date with materials developments and the evolution of rider expectations.

One such example is the company’s top-selling fork tube program, available through Drag Specialties. CCE black tubes are DLC (Diamond Like Carbon) coated for performance and durability, with gold fork tubes featuring state-of-the-art titanium nitride coating.
The company has been manufacturing extension fork tubes for more than 30 years, and started with DOM 1026 steel tubing that is ordered specially from a tubing mill. The company then centerless grind the outside diameter to OEM specifications and machine the rest of the tube to exact ID specs.

Shark Bait II

As the April edition of AMD Magazine went to press, the fall-out from the debate about Harley’s leadership, the dissatisfaction and churn in the dealer network, the soft share price and Harley’s increasingly exposed spend on dividends, the controversial share buyback programs and the uncertainty about new model policy continue to reverberate around a nervous market.
Common sense, logic and necessity dictate that this summer’s MY 2019 announcement must, surely, please to goodness, see a fairly substantial rabbit pulled from Milwaukee’s bag if it is to keep pace with its “100 new models in 10 years” pledge and sustain the momentum created by the 2018 Softails and 2017’s M-8 Tourers.
The problem is that way more people than ever, and well informed, experienced and “connected” observers at that, are saying they hope the E-bikes-in-2019  plan (one apparently reinforced by last month’s Alta Motors investment) turns out to be a smoke screen to deflect attention from impending news this summer, then we are now, more than ever, in a place where the normal rules of sense and logic are suspended.
As one authorized Harley dealer put it to me recently, if there were a plan then sure, changing leadership at this time would be folly, “but as far as many of us can determine, the only plan is to, at some stage, devise a plan.”
With over $5 bn of capital (some of it borrowed), tied up in share buybacks which are mostly worth less than was paid given the present share price, against a current reduced market cap of around $7.5 bn, it has been said that where Harley’s vulnerability is concerned, “Shark Bait” (see AMD March*) simply doesn’t do the extent of Harley’s potential difficulties justice.
Interestingly, with Polaris shares trading at around the $120 mark, Matt Levatich’s once dismissive shot across their competitors’ bow as being half the company that Harley is, looks a little hollow now - Polaris Industries’ current market cap is $7.22 bn and heading north as Harley’s continues south.

 ‘can they afford it?’

Harley has again increased its dividend for the first quarter of 2018 ($0.370 up from $0.365). If it follows its own form book, then that sets the level now for the year as a whole, resulting in an annual dividend of $1.48. That may be only modestly up from the $1.46 paid out in 2017, it is up again nonetheless – but can they afford it?
In fact, taken over the five full years from 2013 to 2017, Harley’s annual dividend growth rate has been 18.68 percent, during a timescale in which revenues have only grown by 0.24 percent. Meanwhile senior executives continue to divest themselves of tranches of personal share holdings.
The company still appears to have a relatively healthy 2017 EBIT (given the circumstances) of $891.26 m, which is 18.13 percent of the $4,915.027 bn of the motorcycle and related products revenues achieved.
However, in a final quarter that saw the new Softails come on stream and included a full impact M-8 Touring platform cycle, revenue of $1047.045 bn only produced an EBIT of $101.26, - 9.67 percent on a matching revenue basis.
If Harley’s game-plan is to go private, then, like many I have discussed this with, I applaud the ambition. But can they afford it?
Doing so appears to be the only viable explanation for yet another new share buyback authorization - a further 15 m shares, while some 10 m still open from the February 2017 authorization. Harley has now reduced its outstanding common stock from around the 260 m mark to approximately 160 m in something like three or four years.
To not be prioritizing creative incentive packages to shift the new metal is to fly in the face of conventional capitalist wisdom. Whilst Harley is to be applauded for resisting the temptation to discount, incentives are not the same as discounts if based on list price. Incentives are a common-sense response to softening demand and a prime weapon in the locker of defending brand status, not diluting it.
Harley’s dealers are as much invested in the demand for Milwaukee’s metal as the factory and shareholders are, and to not be plowing as much budget as possible into recognizing that, and to not be working with their dealers to weather that storm is, in my humble opinion, an abrogation of the responsibility that all manufacturers have to their independent dealer networks.
After all, if its traditionally a good enough strategy for ‘Detroit’ and pretty much all other brands (premium or otherwise), isn’t it good enough for Harley?
The best way to defend a “Premium Product” is to make someone want it - desire (aka demand) is king! If there is demonstrably weak demand, then where’s the desire? Harley-Davidson is not Ferrari. At present many would say it isn’t even Harley-Davidson, it isn’t sufficiently “in the game” to be spoken of in the same breath as the determinedly creative sales drives of the past that got it to its 115th anniversary.
For me, as I have said before, quite apart from apparent product design uncertainty and engineering tardiness, it is marketing that is the big Black Hole at the heart of their universe – quantity as well as quality and suitability. Incentive driven selling is a marketing weapon, not brand capitulation!

Thompson earns new record, walks away from 340 mph crash - at Australia’s Lake Gairdner World Speed Trials

Valerie Thompson survived a horrific crash in the Team “7” Racing Streamliner while attempting to capture the world’s fastest motorcycle title during the 28th Annual Speed Week and World Speed Trials competition at the Lake Gairdner dry lake bed in South Australia.

Photo credit: FIM - Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme

While falling short of the ultimate goal to become the world’s fastest motorcycle, the team collected a new speed record and proved the superiority of leading-edge streamliner design by team engineers Denis Manning and John Jans.
Hosted by the Dry Lakes Racers Australia (DLRA), the 28th Annual Speed Week competition was open to cars, motorcycles and trucks. The World Speed Trials, a first-time event for motorcycles only, was held March 17-19. Thompson set a new streamliner record of 328.467 mph (528.616 km/h) during the Speed Week competition on March 15, earning her membership in the Dry Lake Racers Australia 200 and 300 MPH Clubs. She is only the second competitor to gain membership in the DRLA 300 MPH Club and was honored with the “Fast Lady on the Lake” award.
Thompson’s attempt to break the world’s overall fastest motorcycle record of 376.36 mph* (605.69 m/h) on the last day of the World Speed Trials went horribly wrong with a horrific crash. According to Federation Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) reports and team video, Thompson had just passed the four-mile marker on a twelve-mile course when the rear of her streamliner rose off the racing surface, sending the vehicle airborne at 343.7 mph. Parachutes slowed the vehicle as it flipped and rolled multiple times, scattering wreckage for more than a mile across the Lake Gairdner salt flats. Thompson walked away with only minor bruises and lacerations.
“We had a singular goal of running 377+ mph to capture the record during the World Speed Trials. We used Speed Week to test and tune the bike, and I’m happy we set a new record and received the ‘Fast Lady on the Lake Award’,“ said Thompson.
“The wreck during the World Speed Trials was unfortunate, but we are not giving up on our quest for the new record. Most importantly, we proved the superiority of the moncoque carbon fiber design and safety features utilized by Denis Manning and John Jans.
“Without their dedication to high speed safety engineering, I would not have walked away - nobody has ever walked away from a 340+ mph crash on a motorcycle. I’d also like to thank the DLRA and all their race course workers who helped ensure my safety,” added a grateful Thompson.
“We’ve not determined what caused the problem - we’ll know more once we analyze the onboard data collection systems and review films in more detail,” said bike designer and AMA Hall of Fame member Denis Manning. “Valerie did an incredible riding job, doing everything she was supposed to and more. All of us at Team “7” Racing are relieved Valerie did not sustain any life-threatening injuries,” added Manning. A video by team member Lou Fischer is available at https://youtu.be/Yl8NDTyeHqg.
Thompson is an eight-time land speed record holder on a variety of bikes ranging from Harley-Davidsons to BMWs and streamliners. She is a member of seven land speed racing 200 MPH Clubs, one 300 MPH Club and the first female to exceed 300 mph in Australia.

*The existing world record was set in 2010 by Rocky Robinson in the twin Hyabusa engined Ack Attack streamliner. It had previously been twice set by Flat Track race legend Chris Carr in an earlier iteration of the current “7” bespoke 3 liter 90-degree V4 engined streamliner. Both teams are engaged in a duel to put the record over the illusive 400 mph mark, with Team Ack Attack having gone to the Salar de Uyuni high altitude (12,500 ft) salt flat in Bolivia - the biggest salt flat on Earth (4,000 sq miles) in the same search for salt that took Valerie Thompson and her team to Australia. The record that Carr set in what was then called the BUB Seven Streamliner (at Bonneville Salt Flats in September 2009) was a two-way average speed of 367.382 mph to set a new FIM-sanctioned International and AMA-sanctioned National land speed record for motorcycles - Carr having piloted it to a 372.534 mph run on the way to that record.

Off-grid solutions - OptiMate DC to DC

If a rider is nowhere near an AC power outlet and the motorcycle’s battery needs charging, most of the options he or she has are halfway between less than ideal and impractical.
A 12V battery can be jump-started from another vehicle or a friend’s motorcycle - but where are the correct jumper cables when you need them?

You can use one of those nifty lithium jump packs, that is, if you’ve not cooked it to death in your saddlebag! However, the problem remains after starting, and even after many hours of riding to recharge the battery - if that battery has developed sulphation, it has lost its ability to hold charge; or to put it into real world perspective, the ‘no start’ problem will repeat the next morning.
If you have a flat 12.8V-13.2V lithium battery, jump starting is risky. A flat lithium battery can suffer permanent damage if high current is dumped into it. A low volt lithium battery needs to be nursed back to health (in reality, slowly charged back up to at least 10-20 percent) before it can take and deliver high current.
The new OptiMate DC to DC is “a perfect and safe solution for any powersport battery,” according to TecMate CTO Martin Human, “including for 12.8V-13.2V lithium (LiFePO4) batteries.

“It is fully automatic, so there is no need to figure out what battery type is in the vehicle. Simply hook it up to a fully charged 12V source battery (e.g. a good Samaritan’s car or pickup truck) and then within a minute to the flat 12V lead-acid or 12.8V-13.2V lithium (LiFePO4) battery — even a lithium battery with built in BMS (battery management system) protection.
“The OptiMate DC to DC model TM500 will automatically reset the BMS (if the battery has one) and save/recondition that flat low-volt battery, charge it at 2 amps, then test and maintain the battery.
“The good news for those impatient to ride, with a charge rate of 2 amps the battery will be good and ready the moment the green test LED lights up, which means 4-6 hours for your typical cruiser motorcycle battery. That battery will be reconditioned and ready to ‘start your engine’ the next morning.”

A “portfolio company” of Kinderhook Industries, LLC (of New York – who bought then Wiseco parent PMI from Dover Corp in early 2017), RWB says of Rekluse that they are an “industry leader and prominent manufacturer of high-performance clutches and drive components for the powersports market” and that as a “technology and market leader “Rekluse fits perfectly within the Race Winning Brands’ portfolio.”
RWB describes itself as a “leading manufacturer of high-performance and racing-application focused components for the powersports and automotive performance aftermarkets and markets its products globally from its Mentor, Ohio headquarters through a portfolio of leading brands including JE Pistons, Wiseco Performance Products, Diamond Pistons, Trend Performance, K1 Technologies and ProX Racing Parts.”
Brian Reese, CEO at RWB, said: “We expect Rekluse to accelerate further innovation and growth as we add this vibrant brand into our already dynamic portfolio. This acquisition is a reinvigorating demonstration of our commitment to lead the powersports market.”
Serial entrepreneur Al Youngwerth, who founded Rekluse in 2002, said: “I am excited about the opportunity for Rekluse to join the Race Winning Brands’ family. I’m thrilled to play a key role in taking Rekluse through a new phase of growth and to join such an experienced leadership team with a deep and proud history in powersports. We expect this decision will have an immediate, positive and measurable impact for the Rekluse brand.” Youngwerth will “continue his passion for innovation as part of the RWB leadership team.”
Though best known for their off-road products, Rekluse products for Harley-Davidson and some Indian (Scout) applications include their Radius X with EXP automatic clutch, TorqDrive clutch pack and CoreEXP automatic coil spring clutch conversion for Sportsters.

Tucker Rocky to Exhibit at AIMExpo presented by Nationwide

The American International Motorcycle Expo presented by Nationwide (AIMExpo) says it has added “another industry powerhouse to its show floor” with Tucker Rocky making its commitment to the 2018 show (October 11-14 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas).

“The sixth annual event makes its West Coast debut, where it will again serve as the rallying point for collectively moving the powersports industry forward. The Texas-based distributor will have a significant presence on the show floor, as the company recognizes the importance of the show and its impact on the future of the industry. “
Kenan Ikels, Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Tucker Rocky, said: “AIMExpo is a great venue to engage dealers and to showcase new products with our brand partners. The Motorcycle Industry Council produced show serves an important purpose as the place for the industry to come together for business today, while building a future path for dealers and the rest of the industry. That’s why Tucker Rocky will be in Las Vegas, and we invite our customers to join us.”

As one of the leading distributors of motorcycle and ATV aftermarket parts, accessories and apparel, Tucker Rocky offers tens of thousands of products to its large dealer base and says it recognizes “the critical role dealers play in the future of the powersports business” and that it “reaffirms its commitment by engaging with these dealers and joining the industry in Las Vegas.”
Larry Little, VP and GM of MIC Events, said: “As an important distributor partner to dealers, Tucker Rocky is a key addition to the show.  Research from prior shows indicates the top reasons dealers attend are to see new product and meet with their distributor, and we welcome the Texas-based company’s plans to do exactly that.
“This is a very important time in the powersports business, and we look forward to working closely with the Tucker Rocky team, communicating to their dealers the value of attending this year’s show and uniting the industry in Las Vegas.”

Cometic: The Concord, Ohio based manufacturer’s stock replacement and big bore gasket and cam change gasket kits for Harley’s M-8 touring engines that cater to the two different cylinder head designs (models with and without fairing lowers have differing cooling configurations). In sizes ranging from the stock 107 and 114 cubic inch displacements to a big 4,500-inch big bore size, all told, there are nine different cylinder head gaskets in the company’s M-8 line-up, along with new base gaskets and the full cam change kit. Sales Director Jason Moses told AMD: “While the differences between all those gaskets are small and subtle, they’re critically important. “The oil cooled heads, the ones on bikes without lower fairings, have one “teardrop” shaped port close to the bore, and that is surrounded with an embossed surface. With this head design the M-8 big bore is limited to 4,200 inches with no modifications to the heads. Any larger than that would require the oil port to be welded shut and the head resurfaced. Our gasket for these oil cooled heads, the ones with the teardrop shaped port and embossed ring around it, will work on both oil cooled and coolant cooled heads with stock to a 4,200 inch bore with no head surface modifications. The second M-8 head design, the one used on bikes with lower fairings, radiators and coolant, has two round coolant ports set significantly further back from the bore than the oil cooling port. With this design, the big bore can safely go all the way to 4,500 inches with no coolant port modifications, and Cometic has gaskets in those bigger 4.250, 4.320 and 4.500 sizes”; www.cometic.com

Mees Strikes Again at Atlanta Short Track

Reigning AFT Twins presented by Vance & Hines champion Jared Mees (No. 1 Indian Motorcycle Rogers Racing SDI Scout FTR750) stormed to his second straight win of the season in a rain delayed Round 2 at the Atlanta Short Track on Sunday April 8.
Mees mastered the tricky, slick conditions to secure his 32nd career premier-class victory in lopsided fashion. The champ broke free early and then piled it on from there as the race evolved. With his lead never seriously challenged, Mees eased up late and still took the checkered flag with nearly two seconds in hand.

Mees has now opened his championship campaign with back-to-back victories at the DAYTONA TT and Atlanta Short Track for a second consecutive season.
While Mees quickly eliminated the drama expected in the fight for the win, Kenny Coolbeth (No. 2 Nila Racing, Columbia Avionic Indian Scout FTR750), Jarod Vanderkooi (No. 20 Harley-Davidson Factory Flat Track Team XG750R), and Jeffrey Carver Jr. (No. 23 Roof-Systems/Indian of Metro Milwaukee H-D XR750) more than made up for it in a thrilling dogfight for the remaining spots on the podium. The trio quickly worked past a fast-starting Henry Wiles (No. 17 Wilco Racing/Willy Built/Bandit Industries Indian Scout FTR750) and proceeded to engage in a heavyweight tilt for second.
Rising star Vanderkooi made evident the vast progress Harley-Davidson has made with its still-developing XG750R by holding down second for an extended run. But despite his impressive performance he was ultimately overhauled by both Coolbeth – who has more years in professional dirt track than Vanderkooi has on the planet – and Carver.
The Atlanta runner-up result, combined with his DAYTONA TT eighth-place ride, sees Coolbeth move into second in the early-season points standings. Having recently announced that this will be his final AFT season, the series legend appears both motivated and capable of going out on a high note as he continues to gain speed aboard his privateer Indian Scout FTR750.
While Vanderkooi showed the progress being made with Harley-Davidson’s new machine, Carver demonstrated that there’s still plenty of life left in the manufacturer’s venerable XR750 platform as well. He said: “We brought out the Gary Goodwin/Roof-Systems XR750. Harley still has a good power plant. Jarod showed the new bike is going good, but we thought coming to some of these slick tracks, the XR750 would be the best bet.
Vanderkooi crossed the line 0.126 seconds back in fourth. He said: “The Harley-Davidson Vance & Hines XG750R is amazing. The team did a whole ton of work over the off-season, and I think it’s paying off. We’re putting it towards the front and making changes as we go. Now we just need to get the riders up to speed, and we’ll be good.”
Short Track master Wiles and part-time series ace Johnny Lewis (No. 10 Richie Morris Racing Indian Scout FTR750) took fifth and sixth aboard their privateer Scout FTR750s. In doing so, they bumped the second and third members of the Indian Wrecking Crew down to seventh (Brad Baker (No. 6 Indian Motorcycle Racing backed by Allstate Scout FTR750) and eighth (Bryan Smith (No. 4 Indian Motorcycle Racing backed by Allstate Scout FTR750) one year after they helped execute a works Indian clean sweep of the podium at Dixie Speedway.
Jake Johnson (No. 5 Estenson Racing Yamaha FZ-07) and Kayl Kolkman (No. 98 Kolkman Racing/Stamp Concrete Development Yamaha FZ-07) came home in ninth and tenth, leaving heavy-hitters Briar Bauman (No. 14 Zanotti Racing Kawasaki Ninja 650) and Sammy Halbert (No. 69 Harley-Davidson Factory Flat Track Team XG750R) outside the top ten.
Roadracing ace JD Beach (No. 95 G&G Racing/Rickdiculous Racing/Team95 Yamaha FZ-07), who finished as runner-up at the DAYTONA TT and topped one of Saturday’s qualifying sessions, was eliminated from contention in the Semis due to a flat tire.
Following a rather difficult opener, last year’s AFT Singles title contenders came back strong in Atlanta, led by dominant race winner Brandon Price (No. 92 Parkinson Brothers Racing/DPC Racing Honda CRF450R). Price was the class of the field on Sunday, recovering from a poor start to quickly seize the lead. He then doubled down by reclaiming his spot at the front following a subsequent red flag and restart.
Price, last year’s AFT Singles championship runner-up, ultimately took the checkered flag with a near identical margin of victory to that of Mees in the Twins Main (1.667s vs 1.668s).
Last year’s champ, Kolby Carlile (No. 1 Estenson Racing Yamaha YZ450F), and 2017 third-ranked Shayna Texter (No. 52 ST52 Husqvarna FC450) rebounded to secure their first points of the season by finishing eighth and seventh, respectively.
However, Dan Bromley (No. 62 Big Momma & Daddy Deep Pockets Racing KTM 450 SX-F) continued to show that he needs to be considered a serious title contender in his own right. He backed up his DAYTONA TT victory with a second-place run on Sunday.
Kevin Stollings (No. 99 Roof Systems Honda CRF450R) completed the podium in third, with Oliver Brindley (No. 24 Yamaha/Hayley/Fox Plant Yamaha YZ450F) and Morgen Mischler (No. 69 Cycle Craft Yamaha/Rohde's Sales & Service Yamaha YZ450F) rounding out the top five.
2016 AFT Singles champ Ryan Wells (No. 94 RMR/Al Lamb’s Dallas Honda CRF450) finished sixth after a nasty, multi-bike crash in his semi.
Next up, American Flat Track travels to Fort Worth, Texas, to tackle its first Half-Mile of the season, the Russ Brown Motorcycle Attorneys at Texas HM presented by Dallas Honda, on Saturday, April 28.
