Harley Q1 Revenue Up, but Domestic U.S. Sales Down by -12 percent in a 601+ cc Market That Was Down -11.1 percent
In an announcement that is long on hyperbole and the promise of sunlit uplands to come, in the context of the hopes pinned on the M-8 Softails, Harley-Davidson’s first quarter performance disappoints.

The good news is that revenue is up as the company’s model mix continues to track higher in mean price-point terms and that international sales were essentially flat (actually +0.2 percent up) against recent declines.
The bad news is that Harley still appears to be underselling a declining domestic U.S. market and seeing an ever greater proportion of its sales dependency migrating away from the kind of price points where growth is expected to be found in the next five years. While the M-8s (Softails and otherwise) are continuing to favorably affect the revenue position, there is no evidence that they are enabling Harley to grow new unit sales ahead of market decline.
Indeed, the company also announced that it is accelerating its strategy for growth, “anchored by its objective to build the next generation of riders globally” and that, in what is a tacit admission that its plans to return to growth have failed so far, the company says that it is “currently refining its plans, and this summer intends to reveal significant additional steps to improve performance and value creation through 2022.”
Harley-Davidson international retail motorcycle sales were up +0.2 percent in the first quarter of 2018 compared to 2017, and U.S. retail sales were down -12.0 percent. Worldwide retail sales decreased -7.2 percent.
“We are pleased to deliver revenue growth on the heels of our recent product investments in Softail and Touring. This, plus solid financial services segment performance and strong cash returns during the first quarter, underscores our commitment to drive shareholder value,” said Matt Levatich, President and Chief Executive Officer, Harley-Davidson, Inc.  “Our international markets returned to retail sales growth supporting our long-term objective to increase international sales to build the next generation of riders globally.”
The company says that during the first quarter it continued progress on its 2027 objectives: build 2 million new riders in the U.S., grow its international business to 50 percent of annual volume, launch 100 new high impact motorcycles, and do so profitably and sustainably.
The company’s release also states that, considering the prolonged softness in the U.S. industry, and what the company believes is untapped potential in international markets (and in certain high-growth spaces globally), the company is “crafting strategy accelerants to deliver significant value through 2022” and that it “plans to leverage its core business more fully and expand in new directions to accelerate value creation as it pursues its long-term objectives.”
Matt Levatich goes on to say that “our view of the highly competitive global motorcycle market is grounded in a realistic assessment of risks, opportunities and capabilities needed to inspire ridership and grow our business.  Our data-driven insights compel us to enhance and accelerate our strategies to ensure we deliver on our long-term objectives as we build the next generation of Harley-Davidson riders.”
Continuing its “building riders” thesis, Harley states that as it “continues to make progress building the next generation of riders,” it has “increased its reach and impact during the first quarter through a wide range of efforts.”
The efforts cited include adding to the “long legacy of its Sportster motorcycle line with the introduction of the Iron 1200 and Forty-Eight Special models, the latest in a line of 100 high-impact motorcycles the company expects to introduce by 2027”; continuing to “grow the appeal of motorcycling by debuting Harley-Davidson Snow Hill Climb at X Games Aspen alongside ski, snowboard and other action-sports competitions” and that it “increased brand access by adding new international dealers and new apparel and lifestyle boutiques in popular shopping areas in China and India” and “welcomed riders and non-riders to celebrate freedom as the company recognizes 115 years of continuous motorcycle manufacturing in 2018”. Fans were “invited to join the global freedom movement on social media and join celebrations in Prague in July and Milwaukee over Labor Day weekend.”
Harley also sees its investment in a “collaborative agreement” with Alta Motors as “supporting Harley-Davidson’s commitment to lead in the electrification of the sport of motorcycling to reach new customers in new spaces.”
Still claiming that reducing manufacturing capacity is a good thing and a practical step towards growth, the company went on to say that it had commenced its previously announced “multi-year manufacturing optimization initiative anchored by the consolidation of its motorcycle assembly plant in Kansas City, Mo. into its plant in York, Pa.” in order to “further improve its manufacturing operations and cost structure.”
The company says that it continues to expect to incur restructuring and other consolidation costs of $170 million to $200 million and capital investment of approximately $75 million through 2019 and expects ongoing annual cash savings of $65 million to $75 million after 2020.  In the first quarter, costs related to the manufacturing optimization were $47.6 million.
Harley-Davidson’s first quarter market share was 50.4 percent in the U.S. The 601+ cc industry in Europe was down -7.3 percent in the first quarter compared to 2017.  Harley-Davidson’s first quarter market share was up +1.3 percentage points to 10.4 percent in Europe.
First quarter revenue from motorcycles and related products was up versus the prior year. Operating margin as a percentage of revenue decreased in the quarter compared to 2017, primarily due to costs associated with the “manufacturing optimization initiative.”
Financial Services operating income increased +20.8 percent compared to the first quarter of 2017. Harley-Davidson’s first quarter effective tax rate was 24.1 percent compared to 34.5 percent in 2017, due to the favorable impact of the ‘2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act’.
Cash and marketable securities were $753.5 million at the end of Q1 2018 compared to $844.7 million in 2017. Harley-Davidson generated $191.6 million of cash from operating activities in 2018 so far compared to $159.9 million in 2017. The company paid a cash dividend of $0.37 per share for the first quarter, an increase of 1.4 percent compared to the prior year.
On a discretionary basis, Harley-Davidson repurchased 1.4 million shares of its common stock during the first quarter for $65.1 million. During the quarter, there were approximately 169.2 million weighted-average diluted common shares outstanding.  At the end of the quarter, 24.2 million shares remained on board-approved share repurchase authorizations.
Harley forecasts motorcycle shipments to be approximately 231,000 to 236,000 motorcycles in 2018; approximately 67,500 to 72,500 in the second quarter.

ProBEAM – the first ‘Light Pipe’ applications for motorcycle lights

Market leading motorcycle lights specialist Custom Dynamics (Youngsville, North Carolina) has taken its top-selling motorcycle lights program to another level with the launch of the company’s premium ‘ProBEAM line at the recent Drag Specialties Dealer Expo at Indianapolis.

Profiled ‘Light Pipe’ taillights

The headline news is the first application of the kind of ‘Light Pipe’ technology seen on top-end automotive lights for motorcycles.
Not an array of multiple LEDs, but a formed tube with reflectors magnifying LEDs located at either end, the design creates a distinctive look with increased visibility, greater reliability and, by separating the rear light from the brake light function, greater cognisance with following traffic.
The location of the LEDs in the housing at either end of the curved tube also significantly increases peripheral visibility with a 90 degree ‘turn’ that is proud of the housing at either end. There’s an old saying in design and engineering, that if something looks right, it is right – and these rear lights look exactly the way you would want them to.
The company has used premium auto grade LEDs and components throughout its new ‘ProBEAM’ line, and owner Dave Pribula says “these have been two years in development and we have four patents to protect our design work. All our products are backed by our lifetime LED warranty, and these are the best available.

Turn signals

“The higher grade means they are more reliable, and this is the first time that ‘Light Pipe’ technology has been used for motorcycle lights, for a very good reason – it just isn’t as simple as you might think. You are working with a much smaller space than is the case with automotive lights and other applications, and you are, in effect, channelling the light down the pipe, reflecting it right the way along - the result is a more uniform, continuous light compared to the using multiple LEDs.
“We still use individual LEDs for the brake light, but by using two separate sets of LEDs, one for the ‘Light Pipe’ and one for the brake, you are creating a more visible safety solution with the eyes seeing greater contrast. Instead of going from running light to brake, the brake is an additional light that goes from off to on.
“Plus, it is a great design solution too – it looks more modern and is sleeker – just like we have all become familiar with on top-end automotive applications such as Lexus, BMW, AUDI and so forth.”
However, the application of ‘Light Pipe’ technology doesn’t stop there. Custom Dynamics has several additional products at various stages of development, but for now the second that they have brought to market is their also brake capable ProBEAM ‘Fillerz’, that fill the gap between the fender and hard bags on 2014 and up Tourers.

Light Pipe ‘Fillerz’

Keeping the ‘Premium’ theme going, the company has also upgraded several of its other products with the same automotive grade LEDs and components and potentially hit another home run with its new modular approach to sealed unit turn signal passing lights.
Rather than having to stock a number of LED units in order to work with the various Harley lenses, now dealers merely have to stock a chosen selection of inexpensive flat/pancake style lenses, and the O-ring equipped LED cluster is easily sealed to the lens for a plug ‘n play install.

Headlamp

Passing lamps

The higher-grade LEDs result in a better auto grade white daytime running light (DRL) and brighter amber turn signal. The same goes for the reds – a brighter ring and brighter brake/turn also make use of the modular/kit design approach.
Completing the ‘ProBEAM’ range at this stage are a new line of Best in Class non-adaptive headlights. They have been developed in a joint venture with JW Speaker, who are using their unique high-quality manufacturing capabilities and unmatched experience for a new range of Custom Dynamics 5 ¾” and 7” headlights that are the exact same size as the stock headlights, so they fit right into the stock headlight buckets without needing a trim ring.
They are fully SAE/DOT and ECE compliant and have 3 low beam D lenses, 2 high beam D lenses and 3 projector lenses. They have built-in DRL function, a lifetime warranty against LED failure and don’t need a Hi/Lo adapter.
They are available in chrome or true black with optional matching 4.5” passing lamps. Both headlight sizes kick out an impressive 895 effective Lumen low beam and 1250 high beam; the passing lamps give 500 effective lumen each.

Zodiac for M-8 Softails

Netherlands headquartered distributor Zodiac International is “going deep” on opportunities to customize the handling, performance and styling of the new Softails.

General Manager Vincent Pels says that “the Softail has evolved, but there is still a lot of room for improvement – in fact the better it gets, the better it can get.”
Zodiac already supplies a lot of parts to personalize the new bikes, and Vincent’s view is that “everyone in the custom market is still only at the beginning of what will be one of the dominant dealer revenue opportunities of the future. These new Softails are a future facing platform that will be part of the Harley and wider custom market portfolio, one way or another, for years, if not decades to come.”
This month we present a sample of the parts that Zodiac has for the M-8 Softails, but as Vincent says, and as our own travels around the market in recent months have shown, “there’s plenty more to come.”

T.P.P. Variable Pressure Clutch for M-8

The Variable Pressure Clutch (VPC) by Tak’s Performance Parts (AIM Corp in the United States) is not “just a lock-up clutch”. The VPC is a system that reduces spring pressure at idle, and as the centrifugal force increases in line with rising engine rpm, it provides the clutch with the required pressure to match engine torque.

It makes for easier clutch lever work from idle to 3000 rpm; in short, it will give you a lighter operating clutch, with a stronger engagement when it revs up and it will stop your stock clutch from slipping when you have a high-performance muscle motor. Available for 2017 to present Touring and 2018 Softail M-8s.

Öhlins FG433/434 Front Forks

These state-of-the-art Öhlins 43 mm conventional style front forks give the bike “supreme suspension, yet with retro-classic style and the familiar Öhlins Racing design.

“The technology in these fully adjustable forks has been proven through the years on numerous applications and works for a range of different applications. The top cap gives easy access to spring preload and rebound adjustment, separately in each leg. Compression adjustment is with an external adjuster on the fork bottom clamps.
Length is 800 mm from the top of the fork tube to the center of the wheel axle mount. The Zodiac exclusive triple trees seen here are CNC-machined billet aluminum with a 31 mm top tree and 35 mm lower tree.

The forks are available with both the inner tubes and fork sliders in Öhlins gold or black. Fork leg assemblies have clear anodized aluminum axle clamps with caliper mounting points. Caliper brackets for 2000-up style calipers for 11.5” (292 mm) and 11.8” (300 mm) discs and fender brackets are available separately in clear or black anodized finishes. OptiMate 7 Select – 12 V, 10 A ‘Ampmatic’

A lot of people think 10 amps is too much for motorcycle batteries, but with the average touring motorcycle engine headed towards 1900cc (115 c.i.) and increased demand for power from accessories (such as entertainment, route finding, routing, heating, seat and screen adjustment etc), battery sizes have already been creeping up to 20Ah and over.
Modern AGM lead-acid technology has advanced rapidly, making it possible to accept high current charge. The OptiMate 7 Select is the ideal companion for those larger batteries as well as the entire range of smaller batteries.

“OptiMate 7 Select has a number of features that make it one of the smartest chargers out there,” says TecMate CEO Martin Human. “Starting with the Ampmatic charge control that adjusts charge current to match the condition and size of the connected battery, so a small battery gets less amps than a large one. It also adjusts output voltage according to ambient temperature - a lesser known fact is that in hot weather a battery should be charged at a lower voltage, otherwise you risk losing that power giving electrolyte acid that cannot be replaced in modern AGM batteries.”

There are, of course, high-power AGM batteries now available that can deliver more than the stock battery, but they demand a higher charge voltage of 14.7 V to get the most out of them – “so the OptiMate 7 Select has an additional hi-performance 14.7 V charge mode.
“Then there’s the diagnostic power supply mode that provides a stable 13.6 V with 8 amps of power available, ideal for modern motorcycles that cannot be tuned without special diagnostic tools – and those tools need a fully charged battery to diagnose and update without interruption.”
Martin reckons that the battery save mode on the OptiMate 7 “has the best one out there, as it can save a ‘dead’ lead-acid battery from as low as ½ a volt (0.5 volt). One characteristic of many chargers is that the more powerful and feature-rich they get, with faster charge rates, the greater becomes their own power requirement.
“In fact, the OptiMate 7 has efficient conversion technology not typically found in battery chargers – technology such as its on-board power factor correction and synchronous rectifying, reducing power consumption to less than half than that of other 10 amp chargers, and also less than many 5 amp chargers.
“Also, always check into the versatility of any charger you are considering – the OptiMate 7 runs on any voltage from 100 V to 240 V. Plus, available OptiMate 7 models for modern AGM motorcycle batteries come with different plugs - TM-250 (EU), TM-251 (NA), TM-252 (UK).”

Biltwell ‘Lane Splitter’ Helmets – Feature-Rich and Convincing

The motorcycle helmet “space” is a “crowded house” at the best of times, but with tastes and business opportunities changing as new generations of riders seek to differentiate themselves, the market has become complex from a dealer’s point of view.
The stocking overhead has risen as more styles are needed to cater to traditional and emerging customer groups, and the choices that a store makes says a lot about how close to the action the owners are.

As the stakes rise, vendor choices are critical, and of all the volume helmet options that buyers are faced with, that ability for the shop to make a statement about itself is at a premium.
Enter into fray Californian designer Biltwell. Not entirely new to the market, Biltwell has carefully finessed its offer and the perception of its brand values over several years. The result of that experience is now to be seen in three ranges – their half shell DOT approved ‘Bonanza’ line, ‘Gringo’ and ‘Gringo S’ full face DOT programs (ECE approval is expected to follow later this year), and, seen here, their top-selling comms-ready DOT/ECE ‘Lane Splitter’ full face range.

All three are feature-rich, combining comfort with safety, and all three deliver on one of the ‘Holy Grails’ of the helmet designers – that often sought but rarely achieved marriage between 21st century materials and safety standards, and a convincing interpretation of ‘retro’ design that simultaneously has contemporary and authentic etched into their DNA.
Crafted around Biltwell’s proprietary injection molded ABS outer shell, with a shock-absorbing EPS (Expanded Polystyrene) inner shell delivering the safety, a hand-stitched, removable, washable and hypoallergenic brushed Lycra liner with contrasting diamond-stitched, quilted open-cell foam interior padding, cheek pads and BioFoam chin bar cushion delivering on the comfort.
Generous vents in the chin bar get the air flowing and the outlet at the back lets hot air escape. The ‘Lane Splitter’ shield boasts extremely accurate optics and simple hinge mechanics for high style and easy removal for replacement or cleaning.
A brass peg and hole configuration on the left side of the shield offers speedy, glove-friendly opening and secure closing with little difficulty or complication. Mesh audio pockets are included in the ear recesses - perfect for drop-in aftermarket communication systems, and the whole package is beautifully detailed with a selection of eight different “retro- contemporary” hand painted finishes.

2018 Women’s World Record Race: Kickstands Up May 6

On Sunday, May 6, four women hailing from four different countries will embark on an epic journey to rewrite the record books.

The 2018 Women’s World Record Race, organized by Urs “Grisu Grizzly” Pedraita and the Grizzly Race Team, will decide which rider claims the Guinness World Record for the fastest woman to circumnavigate the globe by motorcycle.
Representing the United States is Kuryakyn dealer-direct representative and long-time powersports industry veteran, Faith Ahlers.
The four riders will begin the endurance race simultaneously in their respective homeland, setting out on a gruelling 15,374-mile route inspired by Pedraita’s 2014 Guinness World Record for the fastest circumnavigation by motorcycle - 16 days, 12 hours and 19 minutes.
The women will navigate some of the most remote areas on earth without assistance from a support team or chase vehicle.  The route winds through a total of 16 different countries, with planned stops at various checkpoints including Ace Café locations in Orlando, Fla., Barcelona, Spain, London, England, Luzern, Switzerland, and Lahti, Finland. Additional notable locales on the ride include the Tail of the Dragon, Paris, Gotthard Pass in the Swiss Alps, Moscow, and Seoul, South Korea, among others.
Although the route is the same, each participant will compete on one of four different motorcycles selected for the event. Ahlers will be riding an Indian Chieftain Dark Horse, Swiss rider Isa Müller on a BMW S 1000R, Austrian rider Anita Fastl aboard a Honda Africa Twin CRF1000L, and Russian rider Tatiana Igushina on a Ducati Scrambler 1100.
“I’m humbled to represent the U.S.A. on the 2018 Women’s World Record Race,” said Ahlers. “It’s an incredible honor to be selected as one of the four participants for this once-in-a-lifetime experience that not only promotes the female riding community, but also unites riders around the world.
“Our collective goal with this ride is to inspire new generations of women riders from all walks of life to step out of their comfort zone and follow their dreams.”

Final Three in Indian’s ‘Wrench’ Bobber Build-Off

Judges and fan votes chose a NASA engineer, OSHA safety inspector and a mining equipment engineer as the three finalists who will compete for top honors in Indian’s ‘Wrench Bobber Build-Off’ for amateur customizers.
A judging panel of professional builders and experts, including Roland Sands, Satya Kraus, Jason Paul Michaels and Hot Bike Editor-in-Chief Jordan Mastagni, along with an online fan vote, selected Alfredo Juarez, PJ Grakauskas and Christian Newman as the top three entrants. The three selected finalists will face off in a custom-build battle for a grand prize of $10,000 and a feature spread in Hot Bike Magazine.
All three will now get a new 2018 Indian Scout Bobber and a budget of $10,000 to design and customize the stock bike. From over 100 submissions, 12 top designs were showcased online and available for fan voting - Juarez, Grakauskas and Newman, who received the three highest vote counts, each come from distinctly different backgrounds and offer equally diverse concepts.

Christian Newman

Newman, a mining equipment mechanical engineer from upstate New York, “is an incredibly creative amateur builder who shook up the chopper scene with his recent build of a 1940 V-twin fabricated almost entirely out of stainless steel.”
Newman will be building a swingarm-chopper-style Scout Bobber with old school custom components, including a Crazy Frank fender and raw metal fabrication. “Newman uses many old-world techniques, which are more painstaking than most modern methods, but require a more intensive attention to detail and higher level of craftsmanship.”

PJ Grakauskas

Grakauskas is a 39-yo family man from Ohio working as a safety inspector for OSHA (the Occupational Safety and Health Administration), “but it’s inside the shed in his backyard where his real passions are fed. With several polished and refined Cafe Racers under his belt, the road racing enthusiast is building a full-fairing Cafe Racer with race-inspired brakes and suspension and increased performance.

Alfredo Juarez

Alfredo Juarez is a 34-yo NASA engineer based in Las Cruces, New Mexico. He started wrenching at the age of 12, but his fabrication journey began in college, building bikes and hot rods for his friends, and making all his own tools and tables. His design concept is incredibly ambitious given the short timeline, but Juarez has built frames in a matter of weeks and is confident he can produce an incredible rigid Scout Bobber on deadline.
The three custom Scout Bobbers will be unveiled on August 5 at the Buffalo Chip during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. The public unveil will trigger a second fan voting process, which will determine the grand prize winner. The winner will be announced two weeks later and will receive a $10,000 grand prize along with a feature spread in Hot Bike magazine.

Mees and Cose each won their semi-final race and earned the top two starting positions in the Main.
“We’re entering an important stretch of the season right now, as Texas kicks off six straight weeks of racing,” said Mees. “To start this run off with a victory is huge. I want to thank Indian Motorcycle, my team and all the fans for their continued support.”
Cose’s third-place finish marked the third time a privateer has podiumed with the championship-winning Scout FTR750. In 2017, on his first race aboard the Scout FTR750, Johnny Lewis reached the podium with a third-place finish at the Texas Half Mile.
“To see Chad reach the podium for the first time in his career was amazing,” said Gary Gray, Vice President Racing, Technology & Service for Indian Motorcycle. “He’s feeling comfortable and riding well on the Scout FTR750, and we couldn’t be more excited to see him compete in these upcoming races.”

In a highly competitive night, a number of riders crashed and were unable to finish. Among those were Wrecking Crew riders Brad Baker and Bryan Smith. Baker went down in his heat and suffered a mild concussion, while Smith was involved in a multi-rider crash in his Semi.
Through three races Mees leads the pack with 50 points. Wiles, who finished fourth and fifth the last two races on his Scout FTR750, is currently second with 46 points. Despite missing the Main in Texas, Kenny Coolbeth Jr. sits in the fourth position with 36 points.
The Indian Wrecking Crew and stable of privateers aboard the Scout FTR750 will continue its season on May 5 at the Calistoga, California Half Mile on May 5.

*Mees’ disqualification at Atlanta (Round 2) came as a result of an American Flat Track post-event tire sampling showing he was racing on “a chemically altered tire.”
Four tire samples from four different machines were taken after the main event in Atlanta, and all were submitted to an independent lab for chemical analysis. Three of the samples were deemed to be in compliance with the benchmark sample provided by Dunlop. The sample from the #1 machine ridden by Jared Mees was not in compliance, however, and indicated the presence of several chemicals known to be used in motorsports to alter tire compounds.
Effective immediately Mees was served with disqualification from the Atlanta Short Track with his points and prize money voided and a 12-month probation imposed.

Polaris Reports +12 Percent Sales for Q1

Polaris Industries reported first quarter 2018 sales of $1,297 million, up +12 percent from $1,154 million for the first quarter of 2017, with first quarter 2018 net income of $56 million ($0.85 per diluted share) compared with a net loss of $3 million ($0.05 per diluted share) for the 2017 first quarter.

“We delivered record first quarter Off-Road Vehicle retail sales to begin the year, driven by innovation and improved dealer engagement. This translated into strong revenue and earnings growth for the quarter,” commented Scott Wine, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Polaris Industries.
“Through the tireless efforts of our team and the efficacy of various quality and productivity initiatives, we overcame commodity and freight inflation and product mix pressures in the first quarter to maintain our gross margin year-over-year, while leveraging operating expenses even as we continue to invest heavily in research and development.”
Polaris increased its full year 2018 sales guidance to up 4% to 6% and narrowed its full year earnings expectations by raising the lower end of its earnings per share range, and now expects adjusted net income to be in the range of $6.05 to $6.20 per diluted share, which includes the absorption of an additional approximately $15 million of commodity, freight and tariff costs anticipated in 2018.
“We are fully prepared to build upon this early success and deliver solid growth for the full year. Our production flow improved steadily throughout the quarter and inventory, snow notwithstanding, is in great shape. With the recent introduction of the all new RANGER XP 1000 and the 72-inch RZR XP Turbo S, and a robust innovation pipeline, we are exceptionally well positioned to bring more customers into Polaris dealers. While we must overcome significant commodity, freight and tariff headwinds throughout the remainder of the year, I am confident Polaris is taking the necessary steps towards becoming a customer-centric, highly efficient growth company,” Wine concluded.
North American retail sales increased 3% for the quarter; ORV N.A. retail sales were up mid-single digits %, with side-by-side vehicles up high-single digits %. Gained market share in RANGER, RZR and Sportsman ORV brands during the quarter along with share gains in both Indian and Slingshot motorcycle brands. Total first quarter 2018 dealer inventory was up 6% year-over-year; ORV dealer inventory was flat.
Motorcycle segment sales, including PG&A, totaled $132 million, an increase of nine percent compared to $120 million reported in the first quarter of 2017. Indian Motorcycles wholegood sales increased in the low-double digits percent range in the first quarter of 2018, while Slingshot sales were down low-double digits percent. Gross profit for the first quarter of 2018 was a positive $17 million compared to a loss of $20 million in the first quarter of 2017. Adjusted for the Victory wind- down costs recorded in both the 2018 and 2017 first quarters, motorcycle gross profit was $17 million, or 13 percent of sales in the 2018 first quarter compared to $19 million, or 15 percent of sales for the 2017 first quarter, down on a dollar and percent of sales basis due to higher warranty expense for Slingshot.
North American consumer retail demand for the Polaris motorcycle segment, including Indian Motorcycle and Slingshot, increased low-single digit percent during the 2018 first quarter. Indian Motorcycle retail sales increased low-single digits percent. Slingshot’s retail sales were down mid-single digits percent during the quarter. Motorcycle industry retail sales, 900cc and above, were down mid-teens percent in the 2018 first quarter. Both Indian Motorcycle and Slingshot gained market share for the 2018 first quarter on a year-over-year basis, in spite of unusually cold and wet weather in March and an overall weak N.A. industry motorcycle market in the first quarter.
International sales to customers outside of North America, including PG&A, totaled $211 million for the first quarter of 2018, up 27 percent from the same period in 2017. Foreign exchange movements represented 11 percent of the sales increase for the quarter. The remaining increase was driven by strong sales in the company’s EMEA business.
Gross profit increased 33 percent to $323 million for the first quarter of 2018 from $242 million in the first quarter of 2017. Reported gross profit margin was 25 percent of sales for the first quarter of 2018 compared to 21 percent of sales for the first quarter of 2017.
During the quarter, Polaris recorded charges of $20 million, including the impairment of the company’s equity investment in the Eicher-Polaris joint venture in India.

Las Vegas BikeFest changes date to coordinate with 2018 AIMExpo

Las Vegas BikeFest has changed its dates to one week later, October 11-14, to be a part of a “Powersports Industry Week” in Las Vegas, with AIMExpo at Mandalay Bay (October 11-14) and the Monster Energy Cup at the Sam Boyd Stadium.
“Las Vegas BikeFest is like no other rally,” says Mindi Cherry, Event Manager. “Taking place in the heart of Las Vegas, it provides the action of the "Vegas Vibe" that no other rally has to offer.”
Additionally, the rally is moving to the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center effective this year. The move creates an opportunity “to produce a bigger, better and Vegas style experience for vendors, riders and attendees.”
Located next to the Fremont Street Experience at 3rd and Carson, the move is said to “put everyone within walking distance of more than 10,000 hotel rooms in Downtown Las Vegas and “allows for the rally to be much more cohesive. Rally Central will be inside the Downtown Las Vegas Events Center and surrounding streets – “one main stage in the events center will be the focus of entertainment, Custom Bike Shows, activities, contests and more, making it easier for attendees to not miss out on any of the action.  The move will also benefit rally vendors, giving them access to the 60,000+ daily visitors at the Fremont Street Experience.”

K&N is AFT Official Performance Filter

American Flat Track (AFT) has announced that K&N has been named the series’ Official Performance Filter for the upcoming season.

“K&N has been designing high-flow, high-performance motorcycle air filters for nearly five decades. A long-time fixture at the front of the world's premier dirt track motorcycle racing series, this newly-announced official partner status is a natural evolution of K&N’s extensive involvement in the sport.
“As part of that partnership, K&N will award a $500 Holeshot bounty to the rider grabbing the holeshot of each AFT Twins main event throughout the 2018 campaign.
“K&N products are widely used by teams in American Flat Track and we welcome their support for the series,” said Michael Lock, CEO of American Flat Track. “The Holeshot bounty should also ensure some fierce action at the start of each AFT Twins main event.”
Founded by, and taking its name from, Ken Johnson and Norm McDonald in 1964, K&N has been dedicated to motorcycle dirt track racing for as long as it has existed. Long synonymous with performance, K&N has since grown into a motorsports powerhouse boasting a significant presence in paddocks as diverse as NASCAR, NHRA and Snocross snowmobile racing.
Last season, K&N-backed riders such as Brad Baker, Sammy Halbert and Shayna Texter routinely battled for the checkered flag in both AFT Twins presented by Vance & Hines and AFT Singles competition. Expect more of the same in 2018!
“K&N is thrilled to join AFT as the Official Filter,” said Ross Berlanga, K&N Brand Manager. “K&N was born in the dirt, so AFT is a natural fit for us to show how well our products perform on the track. As Flat Track riders back in the 1960s, Ken and Norm saw a need to create a better filter, one that would provide protection, increased performance and longevity all at the same time. Almost 50 years later we continue to use the same proven technology that you can rely on in your day-to-day commute.”

Indian Wheels and Waves Support

Indian Motorcycle has announced that it will return this year as the main sponsor of the increasingly popular 7th annual Wheels and Waves (Biarritz, France, June 14-18).

Indian will also entertain crowds with its “Wall of Death” in the main village with the Indian Dirt Riders Association (DTRA).
“Wheels and Waves is all about riding culture. This gathering is a time for pure pleasure and the essentials of living. For four days Wheels and Waves stimulates all the senses. The power of the road exposes all kinds of sensations and is tamed by the strength of the sea, the harmony of the wind and the waves, all while the south west sun burns down on the tarmac, steel and sand.”

On Saturday 17th June “fans will ride over the Basque country border with Spain to San Sebastian for a day of flat track racing. Indian will be there with its ‘DTRA Hooligan’ team and swag bags for those who get in the queue first.”
Founded in 2008, the Wheels and Waves event is the successful realization of the dream of a group of friends, the Southsiders, who are passionate about motorcycles. Lovers of the Basque Country, Julen Azé, Vincent Prat and Jerome Allé have brought together hundreds of like-minded individuals who gather in the spirit of companionship. “Wheels and Waves is about eliminating social barriers and bringing different sets of people together without judgement. It’s about the joy of mixing together all kinds of communities, languages and cultures. It’s about living in the present without being nostalgic for the past, but not losing sight of the best moments of the past.”

Harley-Davidson was up to 3rd place in market share terms in Germany for the first two months of 2018, albeit on low volumes so far, having sold 834 units for a 9.52 percent share – placing it above players such as Honda, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Ducati and Triumph. Its top sellers so far in 2018 are the XL 1200 X and Street Bob. However, all manufacturers are eating BMW’s dust – the unstoppable Munich machine scored a whopping 30.84 percent market share YTD.

Established in 1987, Frontier Harley-Davidson in Lincoln, Nebraska, has been sold by owners David and Deborah Fischer to Nebraska and Iowa car dealer Steve Hinchcliff (H & H Automotive).

Harley was the leading road bike brand in market share terms in Australia in 2017 (8,903 units sold), ahead of Honda and Yamaha; its top sellers were the XG500 (1,182 units - the second bestselling road bike overall in Australia in 2017) and the FXSB (1,150 – the third bestselling road bike overall).

Harley’s brake manufacturer Brembo (Italy) saw revenues grow by +8.1% in 2017 to €2,463.6 million, with EBITDA up by +8.2% and net profit up by +9.5%.

EagleRider has passed a “significant milestone” after a year of its dealer rentals partnership with Harley, having signed its 100th Harley dealer to the program. Harley’s Director of Retail development Anoop Prakash said “our alliance with EagleRider is an important component of our objective to build two million new riders in the U.S.”

The Muscular Dystrophy Association has honored Harley as “one of its outstanding national partners” for its 38 years of fundraising and support at its 2018 Clinical Conference at Arlington, Virginia. Harley, its dealers and its customers have raised over $103 million for research into the disease in that time.

J&P Cycles is to make Harley’s 115th anniversary celebrations at Milwaukee (Aug 29 - Sept 2) a stop on its Mobile Tour - one of nine stops for 2018 that should see the company getting in front of more than a million enthusiasts. Having kicked off the tour at Daytona in March, further upcoming events include its own Iowa Rally in June, Sturgis, Delmarva, Biketoberfest and the Lone Star Rally in Texas.

Mees Extends AFT Championship Win with Calistoga, Ca., Round 4 Win

When it comes to American Flat Track legend-in-the-making Jared Mees and Half-Miles, there are no half measures. The defending AFT Twins presented by Vance & Hines Champion Jared Mees won the fourth round of this year’s AFT series on May 5 at the Calistoga Half-Mile presented by Indian Motorcycle, beating Jeffrey Carver Jr. (No. 23 Roof-Systems/Indian of Metro Milwaukee Scout FTR750) to claim his third victory of 2018.

Photo Credit: American Flat Track/Scott Hunter

Mees took the chequered flag from Carver by just 0.114 of a second. This was Mees’ seventh in the most recent eight Half-Mile races, dating back to the 2017 season - Carver being the only rider to break that sequence.
Mees now boasts 33 career premier-class victories, tying him with Kenny Roberts for seventh on the all-time wins list. It was also his 24th career Half-Mile win, just one short of equalling another legend - Chris Carr - for third all-time in that discipline.
Kenny Coolbeth, Jr. (No. 2 Nila Racing, Columbia Avionics Indian Scout FTR750) completed the Indian podium sweep in third, but that only scratched the surface of the marque’s one-sided success on the evening.
Brad Baker (No. 6 Indian Motorcycle Racing backed by Allstate Scout FTR750) and Davis Fisher (No. 67 Bob Lanphere Beaverton Motorcycles Indian Scout FTR750) came home fourth and fifth to lock down the entire top five for Indian Motorcycles, while sixth-placed Briar Bauman (No. 14 Zanotti Racing Kawasaki Ninja 650) was the only runner inside the top eight not aboard a Scout FTR750.

Even stripped of his Atlanta Short Track victory due to disqualification for doctored tires, Mees now leads the championship fight by 17 points over Saturday’s seventh-place finisher Henry Wiles (No. 17 Wilco Racing/Willy Built/Bandit Industries Indian Scout FTR750) 75-58. Bauman is third with 57.
In the AFT Singles, Ryan Wells (No. 94 RMR/Al Lamb’s Dallas Honda CRF450), who claimed the 2016 Singles title, took the Calistoga win after returning to Singles competition following his 2017 ‘Rookie of the Year’ performances in the 2017 Twins series.
For a second consecutive week, Shayna Texter (No. 52 ST52 Husqvarna/JCS Racing FC 450) came second, with title contender Dan Bromley (No. 62 KTM North America/Bromley Motorsports 450 SX-F) third. Last week’s breakthrough winner Morgen Mischler (No. 69 Cycle Craft Yamaha/Rohde's Sales & Service Yamaha YZ450F) was fourth with championship leader Brandon Price fifth; reigning class champion Kolby Carlile (No. 1 Estenson Racing Yamaha YZ450F) was sixth in a tight finish.
The 2018 American Flat Track season continues Saturday May 12 in Phoenix for the Law Tigers Arizona Mile presented by Buddy Stubbs Harley-Davidson, the first of five consecutive Miles for the AFT Twins contenders.
